Tomorrow is the last day of fiscal year 2020 – and the President has failed to sign a refugee admissions goal for FY 2021, grinding the resettlement program to an indefinite halt. The administration has also failed to consult with Congress, as required by US law, about the refugee admissions goal or “Presidential Determination.”
It has long been the the administration’s goal, since even before taking office, to dismantle US refugee resettlement system, evidenced by bans, bureaucratic delays and setting the lowest refugee admissions goal of 18,000 in the program’s history last year. Contrast that against the nearly four decade annual goal that has averaged 95,000 refugees.
We at Climate Refugees have worked for years in refugee resettlement and the US Refugee Admissions Program, including with advocates like CWS Global, who have an easy petition where you can take action over the next few days and add your voice resoundingly to continue to “Welcome Refugees.”
